My work has been largely centred on the idea of the vessel. My work is mainly slab built using a variety of moulds to form the initial shape, I then add thin textured slabs to the pieces. The textures are created by rolling the slabs onto one of my Lino cuts, I also add a variety of press moulded and extruded details.
Once dry I give each piece several coats of terra sigillata usually leaving the interior un-coloured, preferring the natural colour of the clay to work in contrast with the exterior form. I tend to only glaze the inside of the vessels so as not to distract from the exterior details.
My aim is to transform very simple materials into pottery that has its own distinctive characteristic. I want to create vessels with interesting configurations, surfaces and textures.
I endeavour to explore the full range of possibilities of one simple form, constantly changing it in an effort to magnify its creative potential as much as possible. My aim is to create pottery with an almost classical and timeless quality.
